  This is pure cinema. Almost no dialogue, shot in gorgeous black and white, this is one of the most uncompromising, horrofic, almost unwatchable films, I have ever seen. It’s a masterpiece. Every shot is so well thought through. The stuff that’s depicted in this film...I don’t know how they shot it with a child actor. Also Harvey Keitel and Barry Pepper are surprisingly fluent in Polish (I guess?).

  Ich war zuerst nicht so recht bei der Sache, als ich den Film schaute. Er sieht toll aus, wunderschönes Schwarz-Weiß, der junge Carrière hat das perfekte Gesicht für die Rolle, die Musik ist gut, aber ich kam einfach nicht rein, war abgelenkt. Und dann kam das Ende.

  Ich habe den Eindruck, dass die Schlöndorff Filmographie auf seltsame Weise die deutsche Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts nachbildet. Von den Anfängen des Faschismus‘ in Törless über die Blechtrommel bis zu Katharina Blum arbeiten sich alle Filme…
