This is my perfect movie. The acting wasn't the best but it didn't take me out of it too much. Round characters, laughs, nostalgia, truth. It's weirdly close to my own life story, down to the hometown. My love for this movie is personal so it might not be this amazing experience for everyone, but this is my review so that's what I'm saying.
It's clear why it won an Oscar for adapted screenplay. Polley let the dialogue develop naturally, changing it throughout as the actors, crew, editors felt.
The acting was thoughtful and careful. My critique is it was a little stagnant in the grand scheme. She let it flow so we wouldn't get bored but it could've been even shorter than 90 minutes.
Second watch. So simple yet so complex. The colours were consistent and beautiful. It gives the movie such a distinct feel. This time around, I really viewed Carol as a mother who's also a human. She's not perfect and knows it. It's a queer story with hope and not too much gratuitous sex. My critique is: can we get more movies where queerness isn't criminal?
What a well done movie with well developed characters. The son, the sister, even the boring boss all had clear motivations. The use of comedy was good, albeit sometimes over the top.
We see a woman pushed to her limit who still has agency. I wish the director could've done everything she wanted with it.
