  The Animal Kingdom 2023

  I thought this looked so cheesy before walking in, but at this moment I'm pleasantly suprised. The dreaded moment where a character makes some obtuse comparison between the animal disease and the director's social issue of choice never came. Instead, you get a pretty compelling father-son story wrapped in some truly gorgeous practical effects. Most of the performances get the job done, but nothing truly special. Every moment where I thought the low budget was apparent(the flying scene) was offset by an equally impressive moment. Loved the character designs here. Between this and The Substance the French makeup department is killing it right now.

  This movie really does have all the ingredients to be an all-timer. Zoe Kravitz's direction is solid, and the concept is really interesting. I'd even say some of the scenes border on being great.
