This is an all-timer on the "What the fuck did I just watch" list. What starts off so innocently cute and awkward slowly morphs into a dense dark comedy that borders on insanity. The way these two actors stumble around the physical space of this one big room while mis-connecting with each other in one of the most surreal ways possible is incredible, and I'm not quite sure I have words yet to describe how those last two monologues tore…

The Outrun 2024
I found this to be a very beautiful picture that really revels in its small moments and ideas. Little tokens of memories. Drenching yourself in pulsating music to feel something. Conducting the orchestra of the world. Some of the visual poetry got to me during multiple sequences and made me quite emotional.
It paints a central metaphor of humans as part of nature, and how just as the waves and birds, we’re destined to break at our crests and get…

An American Werewolf in Paris 1997
I'm a simple man. I see Julie Delpy, I watch.
This is such a dumb movie, but there's moments of absolute comedy brilliance. The CGI and green screening is BAD. At least it picks a tone and sticks with it. There's multiple sequences that feel like a silly comedy direct-to-video ripoff of Before Sunrise.

An American Werewolf in London 1981
A very weird movie with things that I really love and things that I'm just sort of perplexed by? A+ special effects, even if they feel a little disjointed with the cuts. I really wish the tone was of the movie was figured out more, you can be horror/comedy without jumping between the two whenever you want in each sequence. Also seems like the second half of the movie starts moving too quickly -- would have liked the 'slasher' section to be more than a few shots.

The Color Purple 1985
There's no shortage of the Spielberg mystique and airiness in this adaptation, and I'm not entirely sold that it works for this.
Undeniably, Whoopi Goldberg is the standout, but there's a distinct lack of understanding within the confines of her story. Maybe it's not a lack of understanding, but you can certainly feel that Spielberg at least held back on some aspects of her life in order to keep the mood up. I'm not saying you have to go full…

Sharp Stick 2022
Sundance 2022 Screening #6
I know people love to talk shit about Lena Dunham, but despite some of her flaws, I mostly love her sense of charm and wit and weirdness that flowed through Girls and flows through Sharp Stick as well. Kristine Froseth gives it her all in a performance that's equal parts insecure, brave, and funny, while Jon Bernthal continues to prove that he's one of the best supporting actors you can get for any type of film.…
