Best movie to watch for people who doubt Nicholas Cage's acting ability. I love the way this movie dares to leave things unexplained, like what the speech about a coming earthquake is supposed to signify or Cage's character's backstory. I'm not sure about the former, but I (think I) get the feeling.

I'm actually writing this review halfway through my second viewing, but I feel like this isn't premature. I now think this is actually one of his best films, and I hope I understand why critics were calling it his most personal film.
I'll describe it as Wes Anderson's version of Fellini's 8 1/2, except in Wes' case the problem is not that he can no longer do what he did before but that he can't stop doing what he did…

Such a beautiful movie. I was considering nitpicking on the subplot about Mary, but actually now that I think about it, it makes sense to have something dramatic tying the scenes in the real world together.
The ending is now one of my favorite scenes in cinema. The sheer bravery of 'knowing' it's all hopeless and saying "f*ck it, let's do it anyway"...
