Things to do in Chuckawalla: pull up to one of the three main locations: a mansion, a casino, a ranch; strike a match; get slapped or kissed or both; sulk; throw dice; get pulled over and/or punched by Burt Lancaster; sun yourself shirtless with your controlling boyfrield; cross and cross again before inevitably crashing through the fatal bridge from the opening (and closing) scenes; count your blessings that from within the frame you cannot hear the score.

Never has a haircut cried out for a hat the way Ralph Macchio's does in the first third of this film. I will also say that it was better, maybe even much better, than I had feared.

It's sad to be a man, baseball makes it worse, and math even more so. But Philip Seymour Hoffman as a baseball coach—worth it!

A Bresson film shot outside of Denver. My favorite non-actor is the skinny kid who plays Claude, Tom Fergus, whose hexis, posture, outfits, and line-delivery are unsurpassed in a film crowded with the kind of kids I knew in middle school in the late 1970s.
