Gentle, charming, mystifying, stylish, tragic. The characters feel so alive and genuine, and the air of desperation mixed with playfulness and irreverence which underscores the film is honestly addictive. I didn’t want it to end.
I would definitely recommend this as a viewing experienceAfter watching Robert Eggers describe what he wanted to achieve, I can’t argue that the film fails or falls short of what it aspires to be. But for me, it only gets 3 stars because it just wasn’t scary enough. That said, I did think Count Orlock was, confusingly, both too mysterious and not mysterious enough - this was a fault for me and contributed to the film’s unscariness. To some extent it is also a triumph of aesthetics over narrative, in my opinion.
