Beautiful blondes with perfect smiles detached from the real world by distorted perceptions of gender and sexuality. Gentle scenes of Swedish countryside and moments of true love lend a horrible atmosphere: even when life is at its most peaceful, the ramifications of trauma are always present.
An old movie full of cruelty to absolutely ruin your day.
I highly recommend to anyone with the patience for this kind of thing. Though I really, really hope the dead fetus at the end wasn't real...
In a Jon Alpert documentary, the subject guides the story while the crew becomes secondary. It's a conversational style reminiscent of Louis Theroux. Except here, you don't see the interviewer. You barely hear from him too. It's as if you, the viewer, are actually there at Rikers making conversation with the inmates.
As demoralizing as this film can be at times, it contains more life and energy than the detached style of modern documentaries.
Raw and confrontational with no interest in white washing the truth. A great film from the deepest recesses of 90s HBO.
