the actors are great. the cinematography is really good. the dialogue is really, really realistic. portrays family dynamics (absurd and difficult as they may be) very realistically. It's funny, sad and relatable. Some dialogue is so grotesque that you find yourself laughing in disbelief, while some dialogue finds you relating to the characters in such a way, you are able to mirror yourself and your family members in the characters.

cinematography, acting, casting, storytelling, etc are all impeccable. the cinematography is an impressive feat on its own; handheld camera during stressful situations, extremely smooth camera panning and transitions, the front-facing inwards way of filming vehicle use. the vibrant colors of the hotel contrasting the otherwise mute and dull surroundings of Zubrowka, such as the prison, really make the film come to life. some ok jump scares, but it was just so predictable and kinda goofy with the whole smiling thing. it wasn't as menacing as they'd probably hoped it'd be. it just kinda made us laugh when someone smiled, the tension lifted instantly. also the 'bad energy'/monster wasn't explored at all, and looked so stupid in the end (det lignede berta). You knew everything that was going to happen at least 30 minutes before, if not an hour. some performances were decent. some weren't. but really, the writing/concept would never allow for a good movie.

i already love this movie
a really good film. amazing cinematography, fantastic performance from leo, even though he is limited to very few words throughout the movie. pretty good story too. i dont really understand why this catched heat, i didn't find it that long nor 'pretentious'. but i do often find that i tend to like longer movies more than shorter ones, so i am a bit biased.
portrays man vs nature extremely effectively and brutally.
not a must-watch, but definitely a should-watch
