Just might be one of the best post-9/11 films to come out of Hollywood (a low bar, perhaps, but one the film clears regardless).
I was bummed by all the bad buzz out of Sundance because I think that Dee Rees is one of the most exciting new directors working in the American mainstream, but now, having seen it, I’m just kind of baffled by the response. This is an engaging, ambitious, and distinctive take on the political thriller with fine performances, gorgeous cinematography, and a great score. It’s messy, to be sure, and I can see how the alternately opaque and on-the-nose narrative…
