History is like art in that it is inseparable from extinction events. Things will not last and the trick is to make sure they don't.
Seriously not bad. Lots of good writing that doesn’t have room to breathe and gets lost. The framing of the narrative is troubled. At times the mother’s age and illness hit, at other times it feels odd to leave the story at hand.
If I had seen this when I was 8-11 years old I would have been amazed. It would have struck me so deep I would include it among my favorite movies. I would have also probably ended up being a painter by vocation. Instead I saw it while getting over Covid at 2:00 AM in my apartment alone in Ohio 56 degrees Fahrenheit inside. The movie sucks. This movie is a fast fun and silly wart on the world. Self-aware yet unself-aware. It is patronizing full stop. It is not ironically patronizing. It cannot break out of what it is. It is not a whole history of the period. It is sanctimonious and functions as a disavowing repression that leads people to continue marching toward the market through a cursory know-how.
