Withnail & I 1987
how can a film so grimy and taped together be so transcendent? withnail’s fear of being irrelevant and unloved is personified in his bumbling uncle, a stereotype of the gayness both the leads fear being perceived as. and withnail seems to be on the same path, left in the same way his uncle was left. it’s hilarious on the surface and has a lot going on beneath that - themes of repression, love, homophobia, cringe versus being earnest. “nor woman neither”
