There are the makings of a great movie here. Great casting, massive budget, practical effects. And one of the best soundtracks. Hans Zimmer, Jeff Beck and David Cloverdale came together to make something special. This was 1990, and you can hear how the rest of the decade was going to sound in this film. This might be my favourite movie of 2024. I complain often of unoriginality in current movies, and there is nothing particularly new here. The plot is predictable, the cinematography is conventional, and the soundtrack, while interesting, is just piano. But these two cousins, Benji and Dave, just feel real. Eisenberg gets dialogue. I like what it had to say about human connection, but it was definitely more comedy than I expected. I did enjoy how it was more personal and less “eat the rich” that we have been getting the last couple years. She wasn’t a great person either, just less shitty than him. They were both using each other, but at least she realizes that in the end unlike him. So many actors fall for the same “John Malkovich in Rounders”…
