starts out so promisingly as a moody, compelling mystery and ends as a goofy-looking marvel movie most tonally comparable to "blade without the swag."I think that even the best version of this movie would still just be kind of a stoned 20 year-old's High Thought of "what if the world was fake," but i think keeping a little bit of the early plot's ambiguity throughout and less heavy handed loredumping would have at least elevated it. still, a pretty ass…
lots of fun visual and effects. some fun bits but none of the set pieces really stand out as The Scene, in a sequel to a movie with a bunch of them.
why was monica belluici even in this
an interesting contrast with roadside picnic. the book basically explains what the zone is, an interesting little piece of late 20th century social commentary wrapped around an interesting sci-fi premise, while the movie is a desperate and pained plee for meaning shouted into the universe after we killed god. the dumb spectacle guy in my head wanted more of the crazy sci-fi shit we see or hear alluded to in the book, but what little we get is so striking and beautiful.
