This is my 2nd Cassavetes film! I am thoroughly impressed and in awe of his illustrious portrayal of existentialism, morality, maturity, womanhood, love, and most importantly self-identity. I absolutely love his editing style as well - the use of the handheld and zoom-ins are growing on me. you can’t convince me that alma doesn’t look just like Leighton Meester. I literally could not stop thinking, she looks just like Blair from GG.
Raw and such amazing chemistry. I loved loved loved the scene where Reynolds goes to the party, sees all the balloons, and looks for Alma. It’s almost like a child who had never seen parts of the world - innocence with amazement but also fear. The film is really about his need to fill the void of his mother, which is substantiated by Alma’s tender and gentle care for him.
I’ll be thinking about this one for a while!

Though the film sets you up to guess the inevitable, there is a glimmer of hope, and I believe that is what Malle tries so desperately to depict. A somber, but lovely portrayal through the innocence of youth and camaraderie.
