It's clear Scorsese completely rejects the "show, don't tell" style of storytelling. With this lush, beautiful scenery and this excellent story and this wonderful cast who tell you what they are thinking just by blinking-- just mix that together and let it go. The voice-over took me out of it way too many times.
Probably his best recent film, though, and I really enjoyed it. And I mean since Bringing Out the Dead.
This was well worth the nearly six-hour runtime. Edge of Darkness is exactly why the miniseries format exists. This isn't a Netflix ten episode series, it actually has six hours worth of story to tell. I could sit here and sing all of its praises, but if you're at all into spy thrillers— this is the truth. extra grit.
it's not the same kind of fun that we had, but they're alright. They call themselves the Blades.
some thoughts:
- Aunt Maria is smoking hot when she confronts Pete.
- why the little girl thought it necessary to travel all the way across town to get the Buttercream Gang to help the widow Jenkins when she had to pass like 20 adults on her way there is insane.
- Chicago will really fuck an honest white boy up.
