  Where exactly in Texas is this supposed to be? I’ve lived half my life in West Texas and half in East, and these characters felt so one dimensional.  The tone of the movie is very strange to me. The characters aren’t exaggerated enough for it to feel like satire, so it ends up feeling like B.J. Novak is making fun of the family- which I don’t think was his intention.   Of Human Bondage 1934

  I so love Bette Davis in this move. Her performance stands out in a time when more theatrical/stagey acting was popular. Thoroughly entertaining to watch her be “bad”. The camerawork is interesting and a little unusual for the time. Wonderful, early exploration of the sentiment “the heart wants what it wants”.

  Baffled by all the good reviews of this movie. I didn’t feel there was anything particularly clever or novel about this version. It was okay, nothing terrible, just so-so. The characters felt a little flat and the story was just engaging enough not to be boring.
