Dans ce film, David Lynch nous plonge dans la vie tragique de Joseph Merrick, dit « l’Elephant-Man », qui a été considéré comme une bête de foire quasiment toute sa vie, du à de très sévères difformités.
Ce film nous fait voyager dans une époque victorienne où toutes personnes venant de toutes classes sociales différentes partagent en commun une peur, un dégoût, mais aussi une fascination pour l’étrange et l’inconnu.
Les acteurs sont tous touchants, dont un John Hurt déchirant…
