Soderbergh is still as consistent as ever. I liked the style more than the substance, however. And the cast was phenomenal as always. But the film was more talk-y than I expected. Which isn’t always a bad thing, but it’s pretty dialogue-heavy from the start and rarely lets up. And the sound mixing, accents, and word choice left me feeling… lost? I couldn’t get a good hold on whether I was missing important info or if it was meant to…
This was fine. I’ll start by saying I watched this on an airplane and that I’m the biggest Dakota Johnson defender. But this film felt cliched and predictable as can be. That doesn’t mean I disliked it. And I am a big fan of Dakota in these kinds of roles and love a good late-bloomer story. I mostly liked this. Acting, sound, cinematography, etc were of course all A+ as one has come to expect from Eggers. But he has done better and this story is just too weak for his usual standard. The characters barely worked for me and the film felt equal parts paper thin and dragged out. This could have been a masterpiece if the script just had a few more passes.
This film is still haunting me. I can’t say a lot of the plot holds up under scrutiny, but I’ll be damned if this isn’t the creepiest and spookiest film I’ve seen in a very long time. It takes a lot to scare me these days and everything from the lighting to the cinematography and sound design had me STRESSED from start to end.
