    Alright, back to logging. Obviously Deakins steals the show — that extended shot of the officers descending into the tunnel sting operation at nightfall is really just so cool. He even lingers for about 3 seconds longer than necessary just to say “we really did that.” Sound design is incredible too — the cartel is so embedded within the atmosphere even though its on-screen presence is more limited than you’d expect. Totally punches above its weight technically. And all without a single sepia filter!

    Daniel Plainview should go down as among the greatest movie villains of all time. Talk about a truly evil dude. Capitalism man.

    For all the credit that Daniel Day Lewis gets for this role, Paul Dano is absolutely phenomenal as well. He absolutely remains one of the most underrated actors working today.
