Please see my review of “crazy stupid love“ for further context.
The same lack of psychotic emotional immaturity shines in this Thanksgiving spectacular. The most wholesome moment of this movie is when the whole family – parents, grandparents, and grandchildren – gather in the living room to sing a schoolyard song, making fun of a woman’s appearances.
The only constructive feedback I can come up with is that the story needed some explanation to support why we should be OK with Steve Carell stealing his - nothing but lovable - brother’s girlfriend (other than the fact that he’s Dane Cook, I guess?).
In the words of Joni Mitchell, when writing “River:” ‘the world needed a sad Christmas [movie]’.

I’m probably being overly harsh here, but I can’t understand how they took such a good story and $30m budget and ended up with such a flat film. It’s like they said to them selves “let’s make The Big Short, but for stupid people”.
There was no pace to the movie. Keith is up $11m midway through the film and it’s still not treated as the “h*ly f*cking sh*t it’s actually happening” moment. The only way to convey the energy…
