In a franchise full of hits and misses this one definitely hits. The athmosphere is great, the aliens are threatening & scary, and the effects, sets, and makeup are all fantastic. While you can really root for the main characters there is one character who is written to be so annoying that it detracts from the movie, a sadly common trope in horror movies. The Alien universe is fleshed out in a very satisfying way but some of the fan service (one line in particular) feels like a bit too much. It's a very entertaining movie and definitely one I won't mind rewatching in the future.
An entertaining Western with a great cast and some fun sequences but nothing that makes it particularly special. You can see that it's directed by Sam Raimi but perhaps he didn't go far enough, even more Raimi-isms may have elevated the movie. Gene Hackman and Leonardo Dicaprio stood out but all the cast members were good, some characters could have used some more fleshing out though. All in all a fine movie that I might stay and watch again if it was on TV or if someone really wanted to watch it with me but I probably won't seek it out myself for a rewatch.
Robert Eggers is second to none in creating an immersive world and atmosphere and remains my favorite modern director. I loved every aspect of this movie. The cinematography, the sets, the costumes, the music, all fantastic. All of the main cast deserve high praise for their performances but Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Bill Skarsgård especially stood out to me (Willem Dafoe always stands out of course). There were some quite funny moments, as usual for Eggers, but there was…
The animation is nothing short of spectacular with some incredible character designs. Chihiro is a great protagonist but the story and pacing didn't always hit the spot for me. The last quarter or so of the movie especially felt a bit off compared to the wonder of the first half. Probably better on rewatch but I've only seen it once.
