“We’re on a mission from God.”

Finally knocked this classic off of my “WAIT, YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THAT?!?” list. Less laugh-out-loud funny than I had been led to believe, but the absurd circumstances the brothers find themselves in made it a great way to pass a lazy Sunday.

There’s a lot to love in Werner Herzog’s NOSFERATU: THE VAMPYRE — story, cinematography, sound design, the performances of Klaus Kinski and Bruno Ganz. The atmosphere Herzog creates kept me glued to the screen.

That said, Robert Eggers dials all these pieces up to 11 in NOSFERATU, spinning a far more intense, creepy, and stylish yarn in the process. The only edge that Herzog’s film may have is pacing, which I’d have to confirm with a rewatch of the Eggers version. All in all, well worth a watch.

    Oh, you ARE sick!”

David Lynch shuffled off this mortal coil today, so I paid my respects by finally knocking his debut feature off of my watchlist. ERASERHEAD is a movie I’ve avoided for at least a decade for fear that it would be far too weird and inaccessible for me to enjoy.

I was half right: ERASERHEAD is weird and inaccessible, but in a way that works if you allow yourself to enjoy the film as a sensory experience instead…
