Mickey 17 2025
60/100
Strange. I should hate this. Dystopian SF social commentary is blight. But there is a cartoon levity to the ethics that translates serial death-by-torture into slapstick silliness. (I had groaned early on when Mickey’s seemingly friendly coworkers gave no second thoughts in selecting for the most painful array of mortal experiments; is this some Lanthimos cast of alien psychopaths?; how then should this represent, let alone lampoon, our naturalist reality?) The Order 2024
58/100
Artful in a minor way (that cinematography though!) but inevitably too diffuse of character/action/focus/style to land most its blows. Law lies some measure between Michael Shannon in Nocturnal Animals and Benicia del Toro in Sicario and you can tell he had fun with both the gristle and the pathos. Kurzel hangs some distance beneath David Fincher at his most procedural and S. Craig Zahler at his least provocative and yet I remain untried by his developing signature. Inevitably wanted more, undoubtedly needed more, but what we got was a rewarding albeit unrealised thrill.

71/100

This just popped into my head and fundamentally dismantled my primary criticism of the film, which I can't ignore.) My position was that the allegories/metaphors in mother! were so messy, so poorly formulated, sloppily portrayed, and uncomplimentary…

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift 2006
Love that bit when Sean asks Han, if not for money or power or the measure of the men around him, “Why do you drift?” He straight up, dead pan looks-down-the-barrel and answers: “Pussy.”
