I wasn’t exactly expecting an all-timer going into this but even with those low expectations it was painful. it can’t decide whether it wants to be standard crime drama or mockumentary and the end result is a confused hodgepodge bore that I thought was a pitiful, half-hearted imitation of the films that defined the crime genre. frankly embarrassing stuff from people who are capable of better

I can’t call this lazy because it’s obvious a lot of effort and care has gone into crafting all the weird shit that happens throughout, particularly into the smallest details like the blue lobster Moretti has for dinner. the problem is that all the effort and care went into that and eventually the movie realises whoopsie daisie we don’t have a plot let’s just get her out of there sharpish and it’s just a bit naff

I did think it was kinda a mess but a very endearing mess, and also it’s Bong fucking Joon Ho. the man should be allowed to rinse the Hollywood studios and make as many $100m messes as he wants, and I’ll be seated for each and every one. also I could never dislike something where the supporting characters include little freaky alien creatures that head tilt like puppies and Tim Key dressed as a pigeon
