There’s some good here, but it’s outweighed by questionable and just outright bad filmmaking decisions. A waste of decent acting talent.
This is what phenomenal writing looks like, what the Coens have so deservedly come to be lauded for. I also enjoyed the very restrained cinematography. The whole movie feels like it has a sort of observational quality to it. Minimally composed shots utilize the snow and sky to great effect in presenting a cold, empty, and eerily serene setting that cleverly reflects the culture and thematic elements found within the story.
Debauchery has never looked so good. From a formalist perspective this film is absolutely superb. The set and costume design, lighting, blocking in the tracking shots between sets, dialogue, and Michael Gambon’s performance are all really quite something. The film’s use of color is in a league of its own. I didn’t know where it would end up, and I enjoyed every minute of the ride.
I feel like I simply didn’t get it when it came to this film. It’s an incisive anti-western that I think absolutely succeeds in its deconstruction of both the genre and Clint Eastwood’s filmography, but for me it failed to live up to the hype. Eastwood’s direction was perfectly serviceable, but it lacked the panache of the spaghetti westerns it is critiquing. I recognize that the more solemn tone is a choice and making a deliberate statement, but without the stylistic attraction, the film fell flat for me.
