A funny, chill movie with a slightly existentialist undercurrent. Coming back to this year's after seeing it in college, I was surprised at how compelling the societal divide between cutters and college kids was. Part of me thinks that "Cutters" would have been a great alternative title, especially with the reveal of the name's meaning, but maybe that's the point. It's not just about taking pride in your origins. It's also about breaking away from them. That's the tension of the story.

Here's the problem with this sequel:
The first film had a multifaceted character arc, taking Hiccup from useless, loser-runt of the tribe to kid-hero. The sequel had the decent idea of turning kid-hero into chief of the tribe, but failed to dedicate any character development into this plot-line.
To make Hiccup the chief, Stoic has to die. Stoic needs a resolved character arc before he dies. The writers' solution was bringing Hiccup's mother back, rather than focusing on the relationship…
