There's something very comforting about watching a group of friends just be. For most of the film everything is very low-key, so much so that when events do happen near the end it almost feels unnecessary. I could've watched hours more of these women just existing, getting their hair done by Dolly Parton and gossiping and needling eachother, especially with Clairee and Ouiser.

The first 10 minutes of Up are powerful because it gives us an emotional life story in broad strokes in 10 minutes.
A Man Called Otto is what you get if you fill in the blanks in that story a bit more. Heartwarming, no high stakes, Tom Hanks doing a part that seemed to have been written with Harrison Ford in mind. A feelgood film of a type not seen often enough anymore. It knows what it wants to do and does it well. Only the music was a bit too sacharine and overly present at that.

A revisit of this old gem. Humphrey Bogart winning his only oscar but the real star is, of course, the greatest actress ever to grace our screen. A classic, Bogey a little too goofy for my taste at times but everything else more than makes up for it.
