At the core of this film is the theme of human’s innate need to feel loved. It drives all of the subject’s motives. It’s the reason some people stayed in abusive relationships.

This movie is compelling, not only because the director is lifelong friends with the subjects, but also because he uses this film as a passion project through which he can learn to cope with some of his own previous trauma.

This movie contains a lot of wasted potential in what could be amazing jump scares. If you’re watching this movie for the scares, you’re going to be disappointed.

However, if you are watching this movie for the drama and character dynamics, then you just might have a viable movie. Dark Water explores what it truly means to be a mother. In it, our main character, whose mother left her as a child, is struggling to care for and protect her own daughter in the midst of a divorce. While I have not entirely fleshed out the analogies present in this film, I’m still sure they exist.

This film is relentlessly terrifying. Perhaps it was the Sundance environment, but each of the (many) jump scares had me 2 feet out of my seat and did not seem as simply a cheap gimmick. The themes of this film go deeper than just scare to portray a beautifully convicting story
