(Further) proof that Hideaki Anno is the James Cameron of fan service, Gunbuster scans as a proto-Evangelion: protagonist with daddy issues, giant space monsters. A dense web of complicated characters nearly dwarfed by the distinctively esoteric sci-fi world build.

Anno's first directorial effort came about as a way to bail Gainax out of debt after disappointing returns on Wings of Honneamise. Begins as a nudie cutie soap opera with plenty of the "Gainax bounce," eventually amping up to some gigantic space battles. Loved the final black and white episode even though it seems like they just ran out of money.

First of all, Zone is absolutely a theater essential audiovisual experience.  I don't see how the minutely detailed framing and sound design survive the transition to home viewing. Those distant screams and gunshots (supported by Mica Levi's most gorgeous and warped score to date) are the moral crux of the film - the immensity of what's happening in the background, obscured but not at all hidden, while the small-stakes…
