Perhaps only Chaplin could make a cream pie in the face feel so classy.
As a comedy, it's fantastic - like discovering a Mel Brooks film for the first time. As a satire, it's accurate and cutting. The final speech, after you've been battered by slapstick and misunderstandings, hits with a beautiful level of sincerity.
All the more tragic is that this played, at least a small role, in Chaplin's eventually exile from the United States. The greed which creates hate continues to leave the world unsafe, from then until now.

Shrek 2001
Somebody once told me the world was going to roll me. But Shrek was there for me instead. He taught me how not to judge an ogre by it's outer layers. He taught me not to put up walls around my swamp and to let the wildlife in. He taught me to love myself the way I am.

This reminds me of how I ran my first minecraft world.
The visuals are grand, as you'd expect, but the VistaVision, in combination with the costuming and production design, are all so effectivley motivated for that era-defining look. I'd even argue it is Brutalist down to the editing if you ask me. Like, perhaps when yearning letters are read aloud over concrete labourers. There's even the occasional hypnotically-long J-cut that splits up the pacing that a typical scene would hold…
