An interesting film about a much known part of WWII history - the blitz. Interesting, because by centering the story on the experiences of a black boy, the depiction of the British pulling together to endure this harrowing experience is undercut by the awful George (the boy) is treated by many characters. This is a stark change from many war films that depict society as heroically cohesive.
Unfortunately, I didn't find the rest of the film as engaging. Some of…
I remember seeing Shogun ads when I was in London in 2024. Perhaps the hype around the show then set unreasonable expectations for me now.
I found this show to be pretty underwhelming. I kept waiting for it to shift gears. I don't think it did. It was Game of Thrones politicking but without all the other aspects that made (most of) Game of Thrones special.
Some pros though, I thought Cosmo Jarvis was fun as Blackthorn/Anjin. My dad commented…
Pretty dreadful film not saved by some moments of unintentional comedy. However, shout out to Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who is good as one of the gladiators, Atticus. He seems to understand he's in a goofy film. As does Keifer Sutherland as the super sleazy Roman General, Corvus. Kit Harrington is either hopelessly miscast or directed because his solemn performance is super boring.
A technical achievement, particularly the sound design - which really needs to be heard on cinema speakers. However, like I've felt with other Eggers' films, somewhat emotionally hollow. I wasn't overly invested in the outcomes for any of the characters. That being said, great performance by Ralph Ineson as Wisborg's much put upon local doctor. Also, Bill Skarsgard gives a phenomenal performance as Count Orlock - truly frightening, creepy and ... erotic.
