A lot of fun! This is what I think of when I think “old Hollywood,” even though it only came out in 1999. The plot was a bit over complicated and there were a few too many unnecessary characters; but I don’t mention these points as criticisms. If The Mummy were made today, it would be much more streamlined, and those unnecessary bits that made it interesting would be forgone. I liked that that it didn’t feel formulaic, though I can see how subsequent movies have followed its formula.
Overall, it’s hard to go wrong in an ancient Egyptian setting.
I automatically enjoy a period piece, so overall my opinion of this movie is favorable.
I thought the first half hour was the best because Eggers actually engages in some world building when Thomas first arrives in Romania. It’s about at the point where he gets to the castle that things start to get a little wobbly, pace-wise and narrative-wise. Pride and Prejudice explains the arithmetic of love; and Joe Wright, Dario Marianelli, Keira Knightley, and Matthew Macfadyen succeed in explaining it too. No cinematic rendition of a book will ever top this one (I’ll die on that hill). This movie makes me glad to be alive in a time when people can tell stories through film.
