Lack of sleep from an emotionally exhausting day yesterday made the plot of this incomprehensible to my fatigued brain, but Soderbergh’s craftsmanship is spellbinding here, with some of the tightest editing I’ve seen in a film in a long time and a genuinely sexy romance anchoring the picture. And I could just have lived in the soft and misty tungsten lighting that was all over this thing. Did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did, but Black Bag was awesome.

It’s like Christopher Walken is trying to personify the rhythm jazz with his cadence. And that rhythm flows perfectly with Ferrara’s emphasis on mood and atmosphere. The vampiric costume design and emphasis of shadows, the soft tungsten glow of the visuals give this thing an otherworldly vibe, to the point where it felt jarring every-time a character who isn’t a cop or criminal was brought into focus. Glad that I can finally cut this off of my watchlist, and even more glad at how much I dug it.

Heavy recommendation from me to anyone who loves a good Samurai flick. Doesn’t stray very far from the mold of similar samurai flicks, but Takashi Miike adds a brutal and unflinching eye for action, making this film both enthralling and extremely gripping. The band of characters are also all very well developed and fun to watch, adding a lot of depth to what easily could have been a much more shallow film. I cannot wait to watch this film again, and I am eager to dive into more Takashi Miike films. 4.8/5

Certain sequences do feel like they go on for too long, and I don’t think that the humour or lived-in quality of the mise-en-scene is as refined as it is in his previous films (which makes sense, given the ascension of budget here, and for being one of the few times Baker’s film stars a Hollywood actor over a sex worker), but in all I found the ride that Anora took me on to be a pretty thrillingly well acted and engaging…
