Bulldog 2023
Sadly emblematic of the ‘Australian Film Festival Short Film’ sub-genre of filmmaking. If you master the conventions of this sub-genre, as this director has, then you get selected for the Adelaide Film Festival. You might even win awards. You might even start to believe that you are a good filmmaker. But this delusion belies a lack of creativity, and a confused understanding of what film is about. Film is not about easily digestible themes. Film is not about unreflective references to other films. Film is not about uninteresting character studies. But that’s Bulldog, and 99% of what comes out of Adelaide these days.

Satantango 1994
Roger Ebert wrote of 2001: A Space Odyssey that Kubrick had the confidence to linger on particular shots and sequences, inviting the audience to contemplate the film's subject as if they were a philosopher.
