I can’t explain why, but this movie doesn’t feel like it starts. It feels like the viewer just gets dropped into the middle of the universe the film takes place in, and I can’t tell if I love that or hate it. The whole film felt quintessentially Emerald Fennell, beautifully and dreamy while being simultaneously unsettling. The music was absolutely bomb. Casting was also bomb, except for Bo Burnham, I feel we could’ve picked someone better, and by someone better, I mean Harris Dickinson. Overall decent film.

Casting was so amazing, I really love Ayo Edebiri in any and everything, but John Malkovich blew me away as Moretti. The scene where he’s in the dining hall rolling on the floor giving his chant/speech to the cult gave me goosebumps, it was so eerie, but he delivered so perfectly. The set was immaculate; the clam yurt was a little too reminiscent of Midsommar, like I’m sure not every cult has some sacred yurt where bad things happen, but…
It feels like someone handed Anna Kendrick the story of Rodney Alcala and told her to make the worst movie she could out of it. The pacing and the sequence of events in the movie feels so random and haphazardly thrown together. The point of view of the movie being told from Sheryl’s perspective took so much away from the events that happened before and after the game show itself, which is where the actual substance of the film would have been. We were completely robbed of any court scenes that could have saved the the ending.
