  This is one of those “unreviewable” movies for me. Much like a Tarkovsky film (such as Mirror) this is not an easy watch. In fact, it’s an active struggle to sit through Synecdoche, New York without feeling the need to frequently pause or rewind - it’s almost as though (and I believe this is in fact true) the film was designed to make its viewers constantly doubt their own perception of reality.   I made the mistake of not doing a little background research on this film before seeing it, but after learning that the director is trans, I’m able to appreciate the film in a whole new light. It’s a moving depiction of LGBT experiences that I’m sure will age well over time.
