Really moving. Watching this feels like being immersed in an awful dream. There are sequences of symbolism like visual poetry that complicate the narrative. I’ve never seen a black and white film so tonally and textually rich, which lent itself to the sensory, emotional heft. The dialogue is spare; the first line is, “Come closer to me.”

Adelheid 1970
One of my new all-time favorite films. The score, the visuals, a love story centered in a post-war ruin of histories, past allegiances and how to rebuild oneself and a nation after the battles cease but the violence does not. The manor where most of this takes place gives Adelheid a chamber-piece feel. Vláčil is becoming one of my favorite directors.
