Best way I can properly explain how watching Parthenope made me feel is the following scenario:
Imagine you’re chilling home and you get a phone call from your mom.
Your uncle is ill. Very ill. He’s on his death bed.
It’s time to let go.
So you get dressed. Your mind spinning with memories about your soon to be departed uncle, but also, lingering thoughts and feelings about what’s next. Where is he going? What’s waiting for him?

Eggers has a penchant for authenticity and historical accuracy that is often pleasing, but I’ve yet to understand why it should justify his blatant shortcomings in characterizations, dialogue, pacing and even basic story structure.
Less than evocative filmmaking, more a consistently muddy escapade through a gothic legend with some vague undertones that may or may not be there.
A fine example of a standard script perfectly elevated by sublime direction and an engrossing lead. Director Okuno showcases a masterful understanding of the genre, elevating the most mundane of places and sights into set pieces of dread and emotional disconnect. It’s a slow burner for sure, but the last 20 minutes are spectacularly thrilling.
