Stanley Scorsese’s review published on Letterboxd:
In 2022, Michael Bay is back with his new action film Ambulance and so far it’s at a battle at the box office against Sonic the Hedgehog 2. But is it another film with low esteem or will it surprise many people as an action film from Mr. Bay?
Ambulance is the new film by Michael Bay as it follows 2 adopted brothers who hijack an ambulance and take 2 first responders hostage after the heist goes awry.
Ok, so I have my first review for a new film in the month of April and I’m excited to talk about it as I got some time to look at this and hopefully the new Mark Wahlberg film Father Stu next weekend. I know I haven’t been able to post anything lately, I’ve been busy with keeping up with my nephews and learning on some new changes at my job. So with all of the crazy madness out of the way, I now have time to talk about a new film for Letterboxd!
I can remember watching the trailer to Ambulance last year when I was going to see Dune with my best friend. And it looked really exciting and hopefully be a good movie despite having the trademarks of a Michael Bay film. The trailer looked like something from Heat and Training Day but I was on board to seeing it in theaters! So fast forward to last weekend when me and my father-in-law had the opportunity to get out of the house out of boredom, I convinced him to watch it with me at the movies. After showing him the trailer, he said, “You get the tickets, I’ll get the snacks.” Two and a half hours later, we both enjoyed it! You can never go wrong with spending literally $5 for a movie like this!
For the positives, you got a nice little ensemble cast! Big named stars like Jake Gyllenhaal who’s one of my favorite actors, then you have Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Ezia González, Garret Dillahunt, and Keir O’Donnell in this action flick! Gyllenhaal and Mateen II play Danny and Will Sharp, one is a career criminal and the other is a war veteran. Danny recruits Will into a big time heist that would pay Will’s expensive surgery and he reluctantly agrees to do it. After the robbery goes awry with all of the crew taken down, the next move for the 2 brothers is to hijack an ambulance and hold a first responder hostage.
The directing from Michael Bay was average, which is what you’re going to get in a typical Michael Bay flick. You get crazy camera movements, high octane action sequences and shit blowing up. Nothing special. But despite the countless camera movements that can go a little overboard, you’ll get some cool shots from a drone and helicopter shots and Dutch angles too. The sound design was another good thing to add with having realistic gunfire and explosions and the music from Lorna Balfe was filled with incredible basses and blaring instruments pounding on screen!
And now for the negatives. Most of the negatives are aimed at the illogical issues, the pacing and screenplay in Ambulance. There are a lot of illogical problems I have to say about it! For example, there’s a chase scene with the LAPD and the FBI are chasing the stolen ambulance. Everyone is ready to aim and fire, but someone says, “Don’t shoot, there’s one of our own in that van!” Meanwhile, there’s shit blowing up during the chase. The cop was already dying in the van and these incompetent fuckheads could’ve put spikes on the road to stop the chase or have trained marksman to shoot the tires from the helicopters. But no we have to have a pointless chase scene. Pure bullshit! And the fact that the pacing of the film was a big problem. This could’ve been a movie with a 90 or 100 minute runtime and it would work! God rest Tony Scott, but if he was alive, I would love to see him come back and do one more action flick.
So aside from the problems I had with it, I can’t deny saying that I enjoyed it. Ambulance was the first film Michael Bay made after 6 Underground in 2019, and while I’m on board of disliking most of his films, I still get enjoyment on watching Transformers, Bad Boys 1&2, The Rock and 13 Hours. And so I can say I enjoyed this one for being the 6th film from Mr. Michael Bay. So if you’re a fan of Bay’s films, a fan of the leading stars or if you want to turn your brain off and have an awesome ride, I suggest you go see this in theaters!
I’m giving Ambulance 4 stars!
