Polytechnique 2009
I loved Arrival. I did not love this. The pacing felt slow and like it wasn’t moving towards something. Initially I loved the lack of dialogue, but then the characters started speaking and I didn’t believe them. Most of them were playing the meanings of the lines. The action didn’t feel indulgent, with all of the shooting and chaos, but it did feel meandering. I kept wondering what this movie was about. Obviously, it’s about a true event that happened…

Jungle 2017
It seems like this movie has been made before. But not in this way. The story is compelling without defaulting to cliches and the characters are well flushed out. Daniel Radcliffe is fantastic, especially in the second half. It’s shot beautifully and stays interesting and full of pathos straight through. A really lovely film.

The Dust Bowl 2012
My favorite of the ken burns movies. It’s like a fictional post apocalyptic look at the American beltway from 80 years ago... but it was real. The photos and stories are haunting. It’s beautiful and wildly cinematic storytelling.

Eighth Grade 2018
As a single father of a daughter and as someone who loves independent cinema... This was close to being a perfect movie. I adored it.
