    The Killer

    ★★★½

I liked ‘The Killer.’ Fincher’s version of a paul schrader or nicolas refn, comes off a little more pop-y.

The structure of the film was as intentionally exacting, repetitive, unsurprising as the protagonist’s methods.

Not sure it will stick with me for the long haul. kind of lacked the excitement of a bourne/john wick. but also not as unflinching or explorative as a Drive/Taxi Driver.

The middle fight scene with the steroid guy felt out of place with the tone. felt more like a fast and furious fight scene to me.

My Fincher-head wife was hooked and was VERY impressed with fassbender’s yoga in the opening.

I went in hoping to make fun of Top Gun: Maverick. Instead, Top Gun: Maverick made fun of me.

Gambling movies are never really about gambling. Typically, in film, card playing is a pursuit of the greasy protagonist, highlighting his addictions, rebelliousness, and desire to go for it all at any cost. Think, California Split (1974), The Gambler (2014), Uncut Gems (2019).

The card counter, Oscar Isaac's William Tell, is not rebellious. He has no desire to go for it all. He is a calculated, anonymous grinder who exhibits seriously institutionalized behavior. He counts cards at blackjack, but never…

    The Witch

    ★★★★★

Writer/Director Robert Eggers makes his feature debut with this beautifully ominous, period drama about a devout Puritan family’s horrific brush with darkness in 17th century colonial New England.

The Witch features a witch (if you can wrap your head around that) and other demonic elements, but the film plays much less like supernatural horror and more like realistic suspenseful thrill. The story is inspired by early folklore and depicts the world exactly as reverent Puritans, living in solitude, terrified of…
