I really love the concept here; I just wish it were less on the nose, and that the internal logic of the world made more sense.

Great first act, and Mikey Madison is a force. But after Ani’s kidnapping, the narrative turns very straightforward and a bit laborious. The search for Vanya becomes especially tedious.
Madcap for sure, which does provide some entertainment. It’s like watching a runaway train you know will end in derailment; so if you’re into that... But this is no Uncut Gems.
The biggest issue here is the missing deeper characterization of Ani. Ironic that we get a better examination of Vanya than…

Vengeance 2022
A few charming scenes and interesting moments, but ultimately tried going so many directions it ended up nowhere at all. The mish-mash of tones - murder mystery to lighthearted comedy - are very poorly mixed here. Seeing a lot of failed recent attempts at the Coen-esque quirky dark comedy.
Borderline nonsensical script (e.g. bro went from “Texans are awesome” to “you people make me sick” at the drop of a hat). Lots of unmotivated action, unearned emotion, and interpersonal discontinuity throughout.
Also, maybe some questionable wish fulfillment going on for BJ Novak in this story...
