As a native Russian speaker who often frequented Brighton Beach as a kid, this movie is amplified to another level.
The entire story feels like a fever dream, with hilariously absurd events occurring one after another. Yet despite that, it all feels incredibly genuine and authentic. The perfectly toned dialogue spanning 3 languages, the scenery of NYC (notably Brighton Beach) contrasting day vs night, the characters all of whom offer their uniqueness to the story.
This is a hitter I’d recommend to anyone. Without seeing all of the Best Picture nominees, I’d still consider this more than worthy of the win.
Immediately re-adding to watchlist.
