I liked it, but I would have liked it a lot more if I was living in the parallel universe where it didn’t feel quite so on the nose.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 2024
I didn’t like this one nearly as much as the first reboot film (perhaps unfairly, since I didn’t see the two middle movies). But I can’t deny that these films continue to surprise me with their serious consideration of the subject matter! They aren’t just silly monkey movies, they are genuinely exploring hypotheticals about evolution! It makes them very fun to watch.

An incredibly important story told in a totally unique way. Beyond the unusual camera work, the surreal elements were such a fascinating way to portray the effects of trauma on the perception of time. Deeply beautiful and deeply unsettling in equal measures.

The Brutalist 2024
I really think this is a masterpiece. The editing is so spectacular (to borrow language from the movie’s epilogue, “it transcends space and time.”) I was constantly engaged, and super impressed with the pacing.
This story was very meaningful to me. It’s the first time I can remember seeing my own heritage and cultural history onscreen. The themes of assimilation and erasure, expulsion and displacement all echo into the present day. An incredible use of modern filmmaking to pay homage…
