I very much enjoy the way Jean-Pierre Ponnelle directs his movie. In this one it is cool to see the slow motion, especially in the beginning, echo a butterfly flying in midair. I also like the color: at times it is full of color. But in other instances the color seems almost drained and opaque, this usually happens whenever the camera is zoomed in on someone’s face. Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci 1968
I think this movie captures the feel of the opera very well. Especially the opening scene, it is really beautiful. It’s to see Karajan conduct as the bows from the orchestra move up and down. The camera does a good job of roving over the landscape and then focusing on Lola as Turridu sings from off. It creates a feeling a longing which is what I think Mascagni wanted to portray.
