John Q 2002
Perfect watching basic cable at the Holiday Inn on a Monday night kind of movie. Denzel just dominating with ease — no bad scenes, one great scene. With character acting assists from Duvall, Liotta, Woods, Heche, and E from Entourage.

Chronos 1985
Fisheye lens but make it amusement park IMAX size. Fricke is a key part of the "Koyaanisqatsi" (1982) crew, and is probably one of the few who knows how to execute its recipe to create something great. Really enjoyed all the vintage 80s footage, when far-flung places were more...far-flung. Getting the score right in these flicks is 40 percent of the work, and this Michael Stearns score -- while it's no Philip Glass -- is pretty damn good.

Lost Highway 1997
This happens every time I go over the hill from Hollywood to Van Nuys.
(First watch at 3 a.m., after a 🍄 trip. Impeccable vibes.)
I listened to this soundtrack so much in the mid 1990s. Revelatory to hear the tracks in context.
Renee’s and Fred’s house in the Hollywood Hills is ideal Lynchian real estate/portal to a parallel/inner/alternative world — a concrete block exterior; oppressive, dark, and soundproofed within, yet richly furnished in mid century modern.

Flow 2024
New Rewatchable just dropped.
Sublime and delightful and lightly spiritual without being cloying. A reminder of what animation is truly capable of; it connects on an emotional level through image, light, and sound, without the all too familiar scaffolding (crutches?) of story and plot.
It’s also free from the overwritten pop psychology, trauma-to-“catharsis” didacticism that made the last decade or so of Pixar/Disney and a whole lot of anime barely watchable.
Capybara stealth MVP. Labrador retriever propaganda.
