haven’t seen another movie that just gets the look and feel of pre-handover Hong Kong like this one does. the chase sequence through Kowloon and the Walled City is incredible. it’s obvious Wayne Wang feels estranged from his hometown along with the unease created by the mainland takeover, but his influences seem to get in the way of his own voice, not to mention the literal shit shots
