this heartfelt tale of emotional barriers and the freaks on the fringe holds up marvelously; satire and subversion stand strong, and only the music dates it

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

    ★★★★

an emotional, poignant cry to live and find joy; the first act of this movie is a heart-rending, beautiful portrait of life, community, and perseverance; when it returns its focus to resolving the core conflict, this movie really dives into the deep end of its convoluted nonsense and then dives deeper into an anti-universe below the pool; the finale succeeds in sweetly sending off its characters while dazzling with some truly trippy effects

even while bearing the overindulgent plot ridiculousness, this stands as a truly delightful, hopeful capstone to this sometimes befuddling Rebuild series

    Sonic the Hedgehog 3

    ★★★½

focused and consistent, a sincere adaptation which mainly falters in the antics, the worst offender being the double dipping for Jim Carrey which sours Gerald Robotnik’s characterization in the process; but the action is fun, the nods to Sonic’s history are plenty, the portrayal of Shadow is spot-on and heartfelt, and the screenplay never strays too far off course from the Sonic series’ core identity

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion

    ★★★

an ambitious realization of the external action absent from Evangelion’s initial conclusion; episode 25’ can get rather ugly to look at, and starts out a bit too familiar; 26’ can be too overzealous and contrived for its own good; nonetheless, there’s a compelling cry for vulnerability and pursuit of happiness, and it is nice to get a clearer picture of the events surrounding Instrumentality
