Cinematography and sound design really gave it that extra bump.
I believed this worked so well because there is never a reason given as to why the Western Forces have seceded from the rest of America. It leaves a lot of things open to speculation and I don’t think you need an answer. There doesn’t seem to be a clear ideology behind either side.Edit: after more thought I think this captured very well the existential dread the journalists felt. Also showcased how some people just really get off on this carnage i.e. the character of Joel.
